Within the city and within walking distance of it, we can find very important natural reserves and areas of importance for the conservation of birds (AICAS).
Mexico is considered, worldwide, as the fourth country with the greatest diversity of flora and fauna, and Chiapas, along with Oaxaca, are the states with the greatest biological richness in the country. 69%, about 642 of the bird species of Mexico, are found in Chiapas (González & Domínguez, 1985. Quoted by Vázquez, S., 1988).
In the Zoque cultural region (Tuxtla Gutiérrez, and its metropolitan area, as well as the central region of the State) diverse ecosystems converge, some without a doubt considered as an important link in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.
